Voice Lessons

For singers, actors, dancers, professional voice users and beginners.

De Losinno Voice Studio

In my studio we will explore all the possibilities of your unique voice.

We will work together to focus on the coordination of the heart, mind, body and voice using teachings from the Bel Canto method as well as scientific understanding of vocal function.

We will aim to keep the breath flowing, allowing for a buoyant and energised feeling as we sing, whilst also working on releasing jaw, tongue, neck, shoulder and general body tension through specific body stretches and meditative modalities. This increased kinaesthetic awareness and knowledge will empower you to practice with greater efficiency, giving you faster results.

From this, we can then create a more resonant, flexible, free and easy tone which will give you longevity, confidence and a way to authentically express your true inner self.

We will try to decipher the language of singing, using expressions such as open throat, support, appoggio, belt, mixed voice and more; explaining them by using the many different singing techniques that I have studied (of which there are many!). Together we will persevere until these concepts make sense to you and you are able to experience them. Then we can truly explore the full extent of your range, vocal power and vocal subtlety.

My aim is to teach you to teach yourself.

And most importantly, we will cultivate the passion and joy of singing!

About Carmela

Carmela has been singing and teaching voice professionally for over 25 years. She has a BSc (Monash), Associate Diploma in Opera and Music Theatre (VCA) and a Diploma of Education (ACU). She was a full-time classroom math/science teacher for over 7 years. As a voice teacher, this experience sets Carmela apart from most other singing teachers. Her classroom teaching experience have developed her sensitivity to and awareness of the many ways in which people learn and create mastery. Carmela uses many different tools, strategies, media, feedback, movement, stimuli and engagement of the senses, to help get the concepts across.

Over time she has developed a very good diagnostic ear to recognise the underlying problems in the vocal system. Then in a nurturing and encouraging manner, she will collaboratively work with the student to explore the many possible avenues to vocal freedom. This desire to better help and understand her students, has also led to Carmela being qualified as a:

  • Vocal Habilitation Professional (UK VHE)
  • Vocal Health First Aider (UK VHE)
  • Mental Health First Aider (AU).

Through her own vast experience as a student and performer, Carmela can truly empathise with the frustration, struggles and joys of achieving a free and healthy voice. As part of her continued professional development, Carmela attends the latest vocal workshops in classical, contemporary and music theatre styles; giving her more tools to teach in these different disciplines. She enjoys reading about the latest research on voice and the different vocal pedagogies currently in vogue.
Carmela is now certified in Levels I, II & III of Somatic Voicework™ The LoVetri Method, an extremely effective method for voice training.

SOMATIC VOICEWORK™

Somatic Voicework™ The LoVetri Method is a body-based method of vocal training that draws from many disciplines. It is based upon voice science and medicine as well as traditional classical vocal training, complementary modalities such as yoga, movement, dance, acting, and speech training, and various bodywork approaches. The aim of Somatic Voicework™ the LoVetri Method is to unselfconsciously draw the mind of the singer into the physical process of making sound.

Somatic Voicework™ The LoVetri Method allows the voice and body to be partners with the mind. It allows the instrument to handle a variety of tasks with greater ease and less effort.

In addition to all of the above, Somatic Voicework™ is unique in that all of the vocal exercises are focused on function. It is based upon what the voice is doing, not just how the voice sounds.
